Welcome to The Score's liveblog of tonight's WJHC Semi-Final matchup between Canada and Russia. The puck will drop around 7:30PM EST. Highlights to follow.
After his strong effort and highlight reel saves, Dustin Tokarski will get the start for this much anticipated matchup.
It will be a strong battle offensively between John Tavares and Nikita Filatov. Canada looks to shut down Russia early, while the Russians plan to score first, and score plenty.
Micheal: How do you feel Tavares compares to past Junior prospects you've seen? I see Crosby-like qualities in him. Is that an exaggeration?
John Tavares has 12 goals in his World Junior career, 8 this tournament alone, which ties the all-time Canadian record.
John did so in 1 less game than Jeff Carter's 12 goals in 12 games, and 13 less than Lindros' 12 goals in 24 games. Tavares looks to break that record tonight.
Good to see Tony from The Score joining us for this. We have some A-List people following this liveblog. No pressure, Micheal. ;)
While John Tavares does not have the same low-body strength as Crosby, he has a much better view for the net. Tavares is a pure sniper.
Agreed, Andrew. I'm more of a basketball fan than a hockey fan, but that Canada-US game was incredible.
Just so people know, we won't approve as many comments when the game action is on because we want to make sure the people following on their phones get a sense of the action without too much clutter. I've told Micheal to let more comments through during breaks in action and between periods.
If Canada can get past Russia, it will be the showdown of the decade: John Tavares vs. Victor Hedman. It can not get any better than this.
Canada leads the all-time gold medal count with 14. Soviet/Russia leads all-time overall medal count by 26.
I gather most of you would disagree with Cliff Fletcher's assessment that "John Tavares is not a franchise player". He may want to eat those words.
Micheal: Do you think it's true what they say about comparing Hedman to Chris Pronger?
From what I've seen of him this year, what he lacks in his mean streak he makes up for in skill level. It's amazing to see a 6'6" giant fly.
Brad: What had a more intense vibe pre-game, Canada-US or Canada-Russia?
Who is going to fight Brad?
Andrew: In the exhibition game, I would have said no. Since then, it's hard to say he isn't a top 3 pick. He's a complete player and the backbone of Sweden. Not sure if they'd be the force they are without him.
The Final Countdown. (Insert song here). Canada looks to advance to the Gold Medal game and put their mark on the "strive for five".
since you requested "The Final Countdown"...
