Hi guys, welcome to tonight's live blog between the Yankees and the Blue Jays. Opening Lineups to come in a little bit, but of course the big news on the day is Alex Rios traded to the Chicago White Sox.
It was reported that Rios was claimed on waivers late last week by a "mystery team". The Blue Jays get no players in return, but in effect they will save $59 million dollars owed to Rios.
Yeah, I'm not too happy about it either Dave. Suddenly, my desk is very outdated.
Hell no, but I think the Alex Rios contract wasn't nearly as bad as the Vernon Wells contract. In fact, I think Vernon's deal has a lot to due with this trade. Money was tied up in Vernon, and no one would touch his contract with a ten foot pole. Rios is more attractive at this time.
Rios was having an off year, but not incredibly bad. He was on pace for 20 HR and 92 RBI.
not bad at all, just his avg.... only guy on the team who can hit w/ risp
I'm surprised the Jays didn't even get any prospects, they just shed payroll that's all. At least they received players in return for the Scott Rolen trade.
who is our CF bacup (who should have been playing there all year)?
If this money saved is not used to resign Roy Halladay in the offseason, there will be riots in Toronto.
So I guess Bautista replaces Rios in RF for tonight? Hopefully Snider/Ruiz/Coats very soon.
they dumped him to pay wells
Ian, kiss Halladay good bye right now. Same with Scutaro and Overbay.
Yes, Bautista filling in RF confirmed.
This is a Roger's salary dump and the Jays are going to start building around Hill, Romero, Cecil, Snider, Lind, etc...
there were a ton of articles today calling for a dump,
"Financial flexibility" my ass. This money will go towards Rogers, and won't be used to increase payroll next year. That's just my thought.
20/90 for a CF is great, as long as he can defend better than wells
I agree Rios was overpaid, but he's still a very talented young player. I think he's hit his ceiling though, so maybe this might be a good move?
no way.... he will be a start CF in CWS
I think Jermaine Dye is only under contract until the end of this season, so that means the White Sox will probably let him walk.
we have zero OF prospects as well other than TS
I'm with you Joanna ... we're all very disappointed.
White Sox will be laughing about this in a couple years. Jays undervalued Rios. A lot.
I hear they're shipping in 10 Chicago deep dish pizzas as compensation.
yeah, hello...gets us some arms or something
although ozzie will get into his face, and rios will be MVP
